I copied and pasted the earlier comment from a Microsoft Word document which contained a very informative image depicting the notion that Telcos were created to connect devices, but digital platforms like Facebook, Whatsapp, Amazon, Youtube etc. were created to connect people.

The digital platform business model is far more valuable than the basic telco network connectivity model, which is why telcos all over the world are trying so hard to create digital platforms of their own.:

Of course, there is much to say on this subject, especially as it concerns MTN, but I will send that Microsoft Word document to you on Whatsapp and via email.

While I admire your write up, I have some rather strong criticisms about MTN’s current “brand purpose” and “brand strategy”, and these have spurred my company to develop a comprehensive value proposition for MTN ’s brand purpose, which, unfortunately, we are yet to submit.
First, it is important to note the differences between the following terms: brand positioning, brand promise, brand purpose and brand strategy, to mention a few.
MTN seems to be confusing the last two.
The term that a company must ponder and then carefully and precisely articulate before even coming into existence is its brand purpose or its raison d’être (or most important reason for existing).
To properly articulate its true brand purpose, MTN should ask and answer the following questions:
1.	WHO:
a.	Who is MTN's customer, as defined by the answers to the following sub-questions?
i.	What are the ultimate physical, rational, functional and emotional problems of this customer and the society he/she lives in?
ii.	What are the aspirations of this customer and society?
b.	Who is MTN, this company that wishes to successfully and overwhelmingly address the problems and aspirations of the customer and their society, as identified in answer to questions [1 a (i)] and [1 a (ii)] above?
2.	WHY:
a.	Why does MTN exist, or what is MTN's raison d’être (or most important reason for existing)? Like most other Telcos, MTN was conceived or conceptualized originally to provide connectivity between telecommunications devices, specifically telephones, not necessarily the people behind the phones. Moreover, this happened when the internet ran on only computers, while telephones, cameras and music-playing gadgets like the Walkman etc. were separate devices, and much of the value now delivered through phones/telecommunications either could not be (like GPS, Maps etc.) or did not even exist (like social media and other digital content applications). Today, much has changed and MTN, like other Telcos worldwide, is having to diversify into many different sectors and also do much more than just provide connectivity between devices: It has to connect people. It is therefore clear that MTN and other Telcos exist today for reasons quite different from those for which there were originally conceived and conceptualized.
MTN exists for the purpose of serving the customer identified in the earlier question and to address the problems and aspirations of that customer and the society he/she lives in.
The task of addressing these problems and aspirations goes well beyond the purview of mere network connectivity, meaning that MTN’s current core portfolio merely addresses a narrow subset of all customer problems and aspirations.
In our definitive value proposition document, we propose an innovative and compelling answer to the question, “Why does MTN exist?” using a thoughtfully articulated brand purpose statement.
b.	What is MTN’S brand purpose? Brand purpose has been popularly defined as a higher order reason for a brand to exist than just making a profit. MTN ’s brand purpose formulation should:
i.	Underpin MTN’s every action in business and society;
ii.	Be indissolubly linked to and coherently articulate why MTN exists (MTN’s raison d’être or most important reason for existing) in words that inspire customer loyalty and emotional connection to MTN’s very existence and every initiative, thereby securing a special place for MTN in customers’ minds and hearts.
iii.	Put the customer first and aim to resonate with them because it is articulated in language that is intelligible to the ordinary consumer and does not obfuscate its essential message with abstruse/recondite business or technical jargon. Plainness of language is especially essential to the brand purpose of Telcos because they serve a heterogeneous target market typically consisting of prospects and subscribers from diverse social, cultural and educational backgrounds, meaning that a Telco’s brand purpose must resonate equally well with (or speak equally fluently and intelligibly to) any member of that market. The (words of the) brand purpose should encapsulate the company's reason for existence and actions in society and inspire consumers to believe that the company’s very existence and actions can transform them from who they are (with their current problems and unattained aspirations) into the person they want to be (with problems alleviated or solved, or confidently pursuing or having attained aspirations).
iv.	Spawn the transformation of MTN into robust and viable ecosystem and digital platform;
v.	Connect MTN's offerings with the customer's and society’s physical, functional, rational and emotional problems, and aspirations.
vi.	Help MTN to stay receptive and responsive to potentially disruptive innovations. Companies which narrowly define their reason for existing in terms of their current portfolio tend to miss out on disruptive innovations. For example, because the railway companies of the 19th century thought their reason for existing was to operate railway services rather than transportation services, they totally missed the significance of the automobile, an innovation which would then go on to disrupt their business model.
vii.	Reduce marketing costs involved in new offering roll out.
viii.	Show how MTN adds value to both the customer and the society.
ix.	Inimitably differentiate MTN from Telco and non-Telco competitors.
A note on MTN’s current BRAND PURPOSE and BRAND STRATEGY
In view of the above ideal attributes of an effective brand purpose, here is my brief assessment of MTN’s current “brand purpose” and “brand strategy”
MTN’s current brand purpose is stated as:
Our purpose is to make our customers’ lives a whole lot BRIGHTER.

MTN’s brand strategy is referred to as BRIGHT. MTN sees this strategy as six pillars on which the brand is built upon.
•	B	-	Best customer experience
•	R	- Returns and efficiency focus
•	I	- Ignite commercial performance
•	G	-	Growth through data and digital
•	H	-	Hearts and minds of employees, and
•	T	-	Technology excellence

With due respect, based on the marketing definition of “brand strategy”, what MTN states above is not a brand strategy.

Moreover, MTN’s brand purpose articulation hardly meets the criteria above for an effective brand purpose. It seems to me a “bland purpose”.

“Bright” may be a simple, familiar word to the average consumer, but it is not immediately associable with classic telecommunications portfolio (products, services and solutions). In other words, “bright” does not resonate with consumers in the context of telecommunications products and services.

If MTN were a light fittings provider, for example, "BRIGHT" would easily resonate with customers because there are at least three connections between “light” and “BRIGHT”:
A.	“Light” and “Bright” rhyme;
B.	“Light” and “Bright” connote luminosity, as light fittings could produce “bright” “light”;
C.	“Light” or “bright” may alternatively be used to describe moods or emotional states. So the fittings may be touted as producing light that brightens not only the ambience but also the mood of consumers.

So, instead of concisely clarifying within its first statement how the MTN brand makes the customer’s life a whole lot BRIGHTER, MTN ’s current brand purpose forces the customer to have to read some relatively technically worded “passage” for an explanation of “BRIGHT” and its relationship with MTN’s business.

The explanation itself begs the question: do the words in the BRIGHT strategy resonate with the average customer or are do they aim to impress business majors, the management board, shareholders or the stock market? How many ordinary customers readily understand the significance of terms like “Returns and efficiency focus”, “Ignite commercial performance”, “Hearts and minds of employees”, for example?

A possible, albeit still inferior remedy
Since, however, MTN is NOT a light-fittings provider but a telecoms company that provides network connectivity to first connect devices and thence people, its current brand purpose might have been better-worded thus:

MTN makes the lives of its customers BRIGHT, or BRIGHTens the lives of its customers, by providing the connectivity/connectedness by which they pursue and attain goals, reach out to friends and family, are inspired to express themselves and empowered to be more productive, influence their world and do even more.

Needless to say, my company has created a comprehensive value proposition to address addresses the flaws in MTN’s current brand purpose and brand strategy. Obviously, it is not the “remedy” above, and the details in my value proposition are not given here.
The problem in this kind of situation is that MTN may never see my value proposition or give me audience for presenting it, since my company will not disclose it without a duly executed NDA protection.
